The charming town of Rovinj

Even though archaeological findings show traces of civilisation since the prehistoric times, historical records first mention Rovinj as Castrum Rubini, founded between 3. and 5. century AD. Since it is located on crucial sea lanes between Croatia and Venice, Rovinj has always been a fortified city of key importance for all nations who wanted to rule over Balkans. In late middle ages, Rovinj becomes an important fisherman harbour, which is why thousands of people move to the city and its surroundings.

Today, Rovinj is a Mediterranean oasis, in which hundreds of thousands of tourists all over the world flock into to enjoy the Adriatic, pleasant climate and great gastronomic offer.

You can learn more about the history of Rovinj here. When the climatic health resort Maria Theresia Seehospitz was opened in the late 19th century, Rovinj saw the rise in tourism. Children from all over Austro-Hungarian empire, but also Russia, Poland and Germany, were coming to the resort. Hospitality amenities opened all over the access roads because of the visitors, which started the rise of tourism in Rovinj we still see to this day.

Today, Rovinj exudes the feel of a small Mediterranean fishing town, something that can be felt on numerous fisherman's evenings and similar events. Because of its rich history, residents filled with stories about local legends and its rich gastro – hospitality offering, this town is a beautiful combination of modern and past, large and small, and peaceful and interesting.
